Don't have an answer, but more things you can try ... If you haven't tried it, VirtueDesktops (a virtual desktop app) will produce this same effect, as well as others, when you change desktops. Perhaps you can gleen some more information from playing around to see if it's other effects work or if it's cube effect works. In fact I think it uses effects built into OS X, not effects built into the application, but I could be wrong about that.
