[X4U] No sound after sleep

I don't get any sound in my headset after the G5 is up from sleep.   
I've to go to the sound in the System Prefs and select then deselect  
MUTE.  Then I get my sound back.
Is there something I'm allowed to do without disrupting anything?  I  
use 10.4.8.
