Warning!  HP dropped *ALL* support for this plotter, and a bunch of others
earlier this year.  They won't even talk to you about them.  If you need
repairs and you're lucky they'll recommend a 3rd party repair outfit.  Of
course that also assumes that there is someone in your area that can do the
repairs.

I hope your friend got a really good deal on the plotter.

Yes, I just got bit by this, but on a different model.
