Richard, Sounds bad. I had a 4G HP iPod that I had replaced no less than FIVE times under their excellent warranty. No wonder they shelved that contract with Apple. I would get an (apparently) new unit each time, and within a few weeks, the same thing would happen: freeze of the UI on the iPod, requiring me to hard-reset it, then the "sad iPod" icon and the endless clicking. I DID find that there is a sequence of buttons to press to put it into sort of a command-line mode where you can select almost like an FSCK scan of the hard drive. I can't remember what the sequence was, plus you don't mention what model of iPod it is. Michael
