I believe I have succeeded simply by installing Entourage 2004, 
starting it up, then quitting. Then moving the ~/Documents/Microsoft 
User Data/ folder to the Desktop or somewhere out of the way, and 
replacing it with the same folder, salvaged from the old installation 
of Entourage 2001.

But maybe that's wrong. Maybe that's office X to Office 2004. 

Otherwise, have you tried just starting Entourage 2004 and going to 
File/Import and importing from 2001?
