[X4U] mail.app and keyboard reading

This may not be an OS problem but it appeared in the wake of upgrading
to 10.4.5
Note: This may get duplicated since I sent the first posting from the
wrong email address and it may subsequently appear in the postings.



After upgrading to 10.4.5 I have the following symptoms in mail.app

Typing into a new email only works for the letter keys. If I hit space
bar or return the cursor leaves the text pane. Clicking the cursor back
in place with the mouse I can start typing again until I hit a non
letter key and then the cursor disappears again.

It appears that this only happens in Mail. I've tried typing in other
applications and everything works as expected.
I've no idea what would cause a problem like this so I've gone through:
Repair permissions
Cache cleaning
by running cocktail.

I downloaded the combo 10.4.5 and installed the update again.

I've tried different keyboards with the same result.

Nothing worked.

Can anyone suggest a possible cause and solution for this type of
problem.

This is occuring on G4 hardware.
