mds is Spotlight. Check your Spotlight icon closely in the menubar and see
if a white dot is pulsing inside the magnifying glass. If so, Spotlight is
indexing a drive. If you click on the menu, it should tell you what it's
indexing and how long it expects to take before finishing.

Is this your first experience with Tiger or did you upgrade to 10.4.4 from a
previous version of 10.4?
