Perhaps they discontinued that feature, as my wife's iMac, running OSX 
10.4, does not behave the same way, nor does it show sender's avatars, 
while my MacMini, running OSX 10.3.9, does.  I am not using IMAP, just 
POP3, so its not that it doesn't work with IMAP.
