[X4U] Saving DVDs onto hard drive

I have a couple of DVDs that I would like to save onto the hard drive of my
Powerbook to save me having to carry the disks around. I already have a copy
of MacTheRipper which does this. However, 12GB is a large percentage of my
available disk space. Does anyone know of any freeware that will compress
this down to something smaller? I don't mind slightly reduced visual
quality. Any help much appreciated.
