[X4U] iPhoto isssue

Can anybody tell me how to eliminate duplicate photos in iPhoto? I 
have over 4,000 total with many dups that I'd like to eliminate but 
whenever I open the main display and select a few to eliminate the 
beach ball spins for a long time before anything finally 
happens...actually, maybe I'm really looking at some other issue??
