Could very well be font caches.

In your Accounts preference pane, Startup Items tab, click the - sign to
remove highlighted Login Items. (Panther)

Or, Accounts preference pane, Login Items tab, click the - sign to remove
highlighted Login Items. (Tiger)

To add items back, click the + and then navigate to the items you want to
re-add. Might be helpful to take a screenshot before you disable any to
ensure you remember what's there in the first place. Also, you'll get the
little yellow "tool tips" if you hover over them, which will reveal the full
pathname to each item.
