How many categories do you need? I have 14 in my Palm and it's 
inviting me to add more. I don't know what the limit is, but what 
number do you have in mind?

How are you wanting the spanning? You can set an event to be 
"Repeating" every day until a date you specify. It's not quite the 
same as dragging a spanning bar across the days, but it does let you 
create events that show up every day until they are over. Is it the 
spanning bar you are looking for?
