[X4U] OSX and NEF files

Hello, I read in the latest issue of Macworld that OSX has a built-in  
capability to read RAW files. That Preview  can show RAW files and  
iPhoto 6 can show files and allow to work on them with the retouching  
tools. Well, that is impossible on my iMac G5. Neither Preview or  
iPhoto 6 can recognize my Nikon D50's RAW files that have the suffix  
NEF which I know is the Nikon proprietary RAW format. Someone has a  
clue?
