With all due respect, I wonder why this is considered as an important  
issue.  Whether or not the sound keys on your keyboard work before or  
after "sleep," for whatever reason, you can always go to System  
Preferences --> Hardware --> Sound, check "Show volume in menu bar,"  
and control your volume level there without fussing with the Macally  
or any keyboard.
