Are you just clicking on the link? If so, control-click (or right- click with a 2 button mouse) to bring up a contextual menu on the link. One of the menu items will be to "Download Linked File". This will by pass the "helper file" function in your web browser (I'm guessing you are using Safari? Should work in other browsers, but menu might be worded diffeent) and download the file straight away rather than passing it off to Acrobat.
