It is normal & proper practice, but Technology Isn't Perfect, which is why Randy recommended extra ports plugged into the PowerMac's PCI slots. Personally, I don't care about sharing bandwidth between simultaneously operating high-speed devices, and for occasional use daisy-chaining works fine for me, but if you keep firewire hard- drives plugged in long-term then a PCI card is likely to be more stable & reliable (provided you find one supported under OS X.whatever.you.use, of course).
