Sounds like you have a view filter on - I've seen this before when  
someone had View > Unread Messages Only set in Outlook (or Outlook  
Express). I don't know if that's an option in Entourage, although it  
doesn't jibe with you having trashed the preferences - did you trash  
ALL of them?
