Most problems with Word on Mac can be traced to a corrupt Normal  
template, corrupt preferences or font problems.

Try the following

1) Quit word
2) Move your Normal template to another location
3) Start Word (it will build a new Normal template)

You will lose the settings that were stored in the Normal template in  
this process!

You can try the same with preferences and also removing fonts. I have  
never heard that Word X is generally unstable even with long  
documents, although that is a problem on Windows. Anyway, how large  
is your document? Are the problems also showing with other files? Be  
sure to keep lots of versioned backups of your work at this stage!
