[X4U] Older G4 desktop - and large format drives

What is the largest size ATA100 drive that is safe to put into an older G4
desktop (g4 450 - not yosemite)?

- I believe it has something to do with the internal controller card and how
large of the drive it will allow...

Also -  I imagine with the proper external case ( that says it can format
300-400 gigabytes) -  that the same drive could be properly formatted and
run on this older computer - is this true?
