adding more to the picture: The problem extends to dmg files, and the machine is actually on 10.4.8 (sorry about that). I downloaded the 10.4.8 combo updater from Apple - it comes as a dmg but a double click results in a "device not configured" error message. And I tried to reinstall a 'package' version of iTunes that I had kept, but the installer application wouldn't allow me to choose the hard drive (red exclamation point). I used Pacifist to get the stuff out, but no change in drive behaviour following the manually installation. Hmm... At least the machine can read from the optical drives. I think I'm preparing myself mentally for an 'Archive and Install" Hoping for help. Cheers, Jon On 19/11/2006, at 11:13 AM, Jon Wever wrote: > Hello all - I'm looking for help with the following.
