That's just the choice of the site owners, Apple and IBM in this case.

But a server name isn't mandatory. And actually, in the age of server  
clusters quite misleading.

Most people simply want to access the web site like 90% of the time.

We are all typing www most of the time for nothing ... just because  
it's a tradition from the first years of the internet.
