Connect the external drive to the new Mac by Firewire or USB2. Start Migration Assistant, and the third screen (after authenticating) will ask whether you want to migrate from another Mac or from another volume on the new Mac. Choose the second choice. The external drive must have Mac OS X installed and bootable (blessed). From there to finished is quick and painless.
