[X4U] HP LaserJet 4550

I have a colleague who just upgraded to an Intel Mac Mini running OS  
10.4.6 from an old Mac running--get this--System 8!

One of his frustrations is that 6 years ago, he bought an HP LaserJet  
4550. Six years ago I bought my HP LaserJet 1220 when I bought my now  
dust-gaining G4 350MHz Sawtooth. I had absolutely NO trouble  
upgrading to my Intel Mac Mini. He has not been able to do so with  
his 4550. He says Apple and HP have been no help at all. He's just  
upset because he paid $1500+ for that printer and was hoping to get  
more years out of it than this. It also means that his upgrade costs  
are more than he intended.

Before he goes out and gets another machine, I thought I'd ask if  
anyone else has had similar issues and knows a solution.
