It is a nice explanation that Wendy has given. It took me a while as an 
emailer to understand 
about threads and to realize that changing the subject line did not in and 
of itself solve the problem. A person who doesn't understand about threads 
isn't going to understand why his/her replying to just any list email but 
changing the subject line can be a problem. To those of us who are 
experienced emailers this may seem glaringly obvious, but that isn't so 
for newbies or others who for some reason have never grasped the concept 
of threads.
