Looks to me like the last G3 iBook (G3/900) was replaced by a G4 iBook on 22 October 2003. That will be about 4 years before OS X 10.5's release date. If it's true, it is most likely because there were G3s made that do not meet the hardware requirements of OS X 10.4. Supporting those G3s in OS X 10.5 would be a nightmare, as it was already hard enough to provide a positive experience for people who wanted to run 10.4 on those unsupported G3s. The 900 mhz processor in the fastest G3 shipped might not be fast enough to offer a positive experience under 10.5, also, along with the max of 640MB RAM installable on that Mac. Who knows yet? It's all rumors at this point.
