It's a yellow shield icon in the group of icons at the right end of the task bar, yes? If so it's Microsoft's automatic updating feature. People used to debate about whether to blithely accept updates from MS of not, but now days you can't afford not to keep up from a security standpoint. From memory, if they accept the update they can either let it automatically download and install the updates or they can choose the custom option which lets them choose from a list of updates to download. After the updates are downloaded they will start to install. If they want to watch the installation process right click on the icon and choose the appropriate option (or maybe just double click on it). Another option is to go to the Automatic Updates control panel and choose to let it download and install updates automatically. Then they will just get a notice that they need to reboot on occasion.
