I have seen defragmentation utilities derided here as being unnecessary, but as I understand it OS X's on-the-fly defragmentaion only touches files of 20meg+ - I guess that on my machine there may have been much fragmentation on smaller files. Whatever, I can't argue with the results - it definitely made a difference here. Stroller.
