[X4U] Cannot select MacSOUP as my email client after running Apple Mail.

I'm running 10.5.1 on a new 24" iMac. After trying out Apple's Mail I
can no longer select MacSOUP as my default email client. It just goes
back to Mail no matter what method I use to try and set MacSOUP as my
preferred email client :-( I am so sick of the problems I'm having with
Leopard. Can anyone help with this issue? It's made my brand new iMac
unusable for work. I need MacSOUP to handle mailto URLs. NOT bloody
Mail.
