From what I've picked up as I roll along, Time Machine achieves its magic by hard linking directories. If you want to dip into the backups and manually pull back only certain items, you can do so very easily (via the Finder). Probably you know that but compared to other backup mechanisms, it's all very transparent and user friendly.
