It was quite annoying at times. One option would to uncheck "Put hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" in the Energy Saver/Sleep window in System Preferences and see whether that helps. The other thing to check is whether your hard drive is getting full. There should be at least 10% (preferably a lot more) of empty space, otherwise things slow down when the computer accesses memory written to disc.
