[X4U] png file

I used to drag picts from a site on my G5 (leopard) and it worked.   
The picts are jpg and they staid jpg.
I now work on an iMac (leopard) and the picts turn png extension and I  
can open them anymore, even if I change the extension to jpg.
If I drag them on GraphicConverter I get all Hex data.  What's wrong?
The number of the pict on the website turns into the word "index".   
The full name is then index.png.  No mather which picture I try to drag.
