Well, that is the best way to do it. Of course you have a backup, right? Amazing how many folks don't. And if you don't, now would be an excellent time to get one. Hard Drives are dirt cheap these days. And if you do already have a bootable backup of your startup volume, the best way is still to erase the drive which does away with the partitions. Use Disk Utility to erase the drive, or partition the drive if you want more than one volume on the drive. But if you don't want to erase the drive, there are a few utilities--Drive Genius 2 is one ot them--that claim to be able to partition on the fly, meaning that partitions can be added, removed, or made larger or smaller.
