Apparently there's no single program that creates them. One of the threads said that even VCD (video CD) comes in a .dat file, so my suggestion is that you start dropping the file on every app you have -- Word, Excel, Keynote, VLC, QuickTime, Flip4Mac, Maclink Plus, etc. One app mentioned by name was "VCDGear" for Mac OS and Linux. Maybe you'll find something that will open it. Have you dropped it into your home DVD player yet to see if it will play there?
