[X4U] converting dvd's

A friend just returned from Europe and gave me a couple of DVD's as a 
gift.  I am in the US.

I can play them fine on my PowerBook, but am not able to do so on my 
region 1 DVD player.

On the label of the DVD's, they say that they are

Pal 4:3 picture mode with
region code: 2,3,4,5,6  and
disc format - DVD-9

Is there any way I can rip and burn this DVD to region 1 so I can play 
it on the DVD player I have attached to my TV?
