Answered this already.

I have rules that properly file my mail into the folders in which they
should go, so I don't move much mail.

I delete a lot of mail on my laptop, and keep a lot of mail on my desktop,
so if the two synched to be identical I'd be in trouble -- I would have to
keep a lot more mail on my laptop than I do now, in order to also keep it on
the desktop computer, it sounds like.

I'm pretty confident that IMAP is not for me.
