[X4U] Syncing filtered mail

I am new to Macs and have just started using the Mail app. I have  
created some rules to filter messages into different folders. However,  
if I read messages on my iPhone during the day, when I open Mail app  
on my iMac when I get home, all messages I have read are in my inbox  
and not filtered.

I am using MobileMe and have checked the Sync Rules etc. box in prefs.  
so how can I get Mail app to filter read messages?
