"The gimp" which runs in UNIX including OS neXt is a free image 
editing program that is well documented and provided, with source 
code, under an open-software license.

You get far more than the cost. But you do have to climb the learning 
curve though it's not much steeper than PhotoShop. You'll probably 
buy a book.

For cropping and making short thumbnails there is also image magick 
which requires the command line but is free.
