Doesn't sound good! I'd minimize as much as possible. Unplug all  
peripherals except the mouse and keyboard and reboot with the Install  
Disk that came with the Mac (with the disk in, hold down the C key  
during startup). Hopefully that will work and you can rebuild as  
needed from there.
