I would definitely try doing a Safe Boot again, but there is no reason to continue to hold down the Shift key once the spinning pinwheel appears. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455?viewlocale=en_US Be patient and let your Mac take as long as it needs to startup in Safe Boot mode. Then restart your Mac normally. You may want to go through the Safe Boot process a couple more times, just to make sure everything is fixed.
