[X4U] Question: Can the same folder be shared for update ?

Can the same folder be shared for update between two (or more)  
applications (like Mail.APP and another app lets say HOGWASHER and  
maybe Graphic Convertor) ?
I have been doing this for several years without issue( the same OS  
and level for at least 6 months) and I have been having issues with  
the finder and the like.
I am running 10.4.11 and on a G5 Dual 2.7Ghz with 6GB of SDRAM.
