This is a "FEATURE" introduced by Microsoft in Outlook and overused and abused by the vast majority of drones in large organisations who have nothing better to do than make life more difficult for the few of us who try to keep the wheels of commerce turning. It serves NO useful purpose and consumes bandwidth and, more importantly, time. Dealing many times per day with a large national organisation, I frequently have to acknowledge receipt of an email simply because the senders preferences are set to always ask. 98% of the time this is a complete waste of time as I will often get a follow up email asking if I received the first one or a phone call requesting the information I sent in reply to the original email, along with a return receipt. That said, if you want to use this, many modern email clients support it, including Thunderbird and its derivatives. Don't know about Mail App as I don't use it. It is also a fairly simple matter to read the email without letting you know it has been read. -- John
