[X4U] Mac Pro RAM question

I already know that if you're putting RAM in a Mac Pro, you want to 
have either 3 or 6 sticks.  Having said that, I have a couple 
questions.  If you have an 8 slot system do you take a performance 
hit if you only have 3 sticks?  What if you have 6 sticks installed, 
do both sets of 3 need to be the same size?
