Cheryl, I have a 2001(?) Pismo laptop that is rarely used. I must plug it in for a couple of hours before it will boot. Works fine after that. I have heard that there is a PRAM type battery, in addition to your real battery, that, when discharged, takes a while to charge before allowing a boot. FWIW, old technology may or may not apply in your case. Hope it helps your friend.
