A 3D graphics application is different than a CAD application.
My son uses:
Blender (free)
http://www.blender.org/
for 3d graphics, but if he had unlimited funds, he'd be using:
Maya ($4,100)

For CAD you can use:
CADintosh ($30)

Cheetah ($150)

ViaCAD ($250)

Bonzai ($500)

TouchCAD ($800)

PowerCADD ($955 and up)

WildTools (add on for Power CADD)
