Anyway, the main things a NAS brings to the party are large capacity and high availability. With a 6-drive array, for example, one could have TWO drives fail but the NAS would continue to operate and the data would remain intact. Should the NAS itself fail, you would not be dead in the water if you had a second NAS as a backup.
And yes, this added capability is much more expensive than using stand-alone drives.
