[X4U] Photos on iPad2

Are you using iPhoto on the iPad? iOS is not the same as Mac OS, I don't think you can search in iPhoto on iOS devices. I've only received my iPad a bit ago so I'm still learning! You can search in iPhoto on a Mac, though.
