[X4U] Icons in the wrong place on the desktop

I needed to find a file and when I was typing the word to search for suddenly the find quit and all icons disappeared for a few seconds.
When they appeared again they where all in one group on the side of the screen.
Fortunate I've Disktility which remembers all the places of the icons.  They're all on their old place again.  I use 10.6.8.
