I'm on a 8-core late-2010 Mac Pro with 24GB RAM, and have no problems with the Nikon. Granted it's not as fast as I'd like, but I can chew through slides fairly fast (I normally scan negatives). Take a look at the spec's on the 8100 and 8200i. It looks like the 8100 lacks digital ICE. This means that with the 8100, you'll have to manually clean up dust and scratches (note that digital ICE doesn't work for B&W negatives). You might also take a look at the previous gen of Plustek's, I think they're still available. My Aunt just got some version of the Plustek, and I've seen a few low-res scan's she did from slides shot in about 1970, they're beautiful.
