Al, Before you go to all the trouble of reinstalling the OS, though that might be the best of all worlds, you can try running the Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update. Since you are obviously online with a different machine, download the installer (link below) and burn it to a disk, or store it on a thumb drive or move it to the problem machine by using "Connect to Server" under the "Go" menu in the Finder. Whichever way you can do it, get it onto the desktop of the problem machine and run it from there. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL866?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US If running that combo installer doesn't help straighten out your problem, then proceed with the reinstall from the disc that Apple is sending you...... Startup from the disc while holding down the "C" key, launch the installer, click the "Options" button in the installer window and then choose either: Archive and Install - If you have NOT backed up your files to an external source such as an external hard drive. or Erase and Install - If you HAVE backed up all your files. WARNING: choosing this option will completely erase your disk. You will NOT be able to retrieve any files if you choose this option. While you are waiting for the disc to arrive from Apple, try backing up your files to some other place, such as another Mac, an external hard drive, iCloud, thumb drive, burn to CDs or DVDs, etc. It is safest to have a reliable backup before you reinstall the OS. I hope that is of some help. Good luck. Cheers, John On Jan 20, 2013, at 3:50 PM, Al Grappone wrote: I put to sleep other night. Next morning woke up but could not get on line. Could not open browsers or apps. No printer or scan. Called apple. Decided needed to reinstall 10.5.8. Do not have disc. They found one and will receive this week. Anyone had this problem? What is the best way to reinstall? Help will be appreciated.
