A fellow photographer just went through a nightmare with the Western Digital External drives. It seems that they have an encryption board in them that is prone to dying. So you're left with a perfectly good hard drive that you can't read. My recommendation is the same as it's always been. Buy a bare case, and a bare drive. Put the drive in the case and use it.
